EARTH SUMMIT 2012

EARTH SUMMIT 2012: 'Sustainable Development - The Peace of the Future' Since the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesberg in 2002, there has been a dramatic increase in threats to peace and security caused by social, environmental and economic crises. In light of the new and immense challenges faced by the sustainable development agenda, Stakeholder Forum is supporting the call for a World Summit in 2012. With this website and a range of other activities, we hereby kick-start the discussions on an Earth Summit in 2012, twenty years on from the Rio Earth Summit in 1992. WORLD NEWS G77 Chair endorses call for Earth Summit 2012 at preparatory meeting for UN Commission on Sustainable Development 23rd February 2009: In a statement to the Intergovernmental Preparatory Meeting (IPM) for the 17th session of the Commission on Sustainable Development, the Chair of G77 and China, Sudanese Ambassador Abdalmahood Abdalhaleem Mohamed, endorsed the call for an Earth Summit in 2012: “In 2012, the International community will reach the twenty-year make of the Earth Summit held in 1992 and the ten-year anniversary of WSSD held in Johannesburg in 2002. It will be 40 years after the Stockholm Conference of 1972. The time will be opportune for the international community to thoroughly review and assess the progress achieved since these two momentous summits. Guided by the “Rio Spirit”, a Rio-plus-20 Summit should provide the necessary political impetus for the range and level of action required to bridge the implementation gap. In this context the G77 and China welcomes the offer of the Government of Brazil to host such a Summit in 2012.” To read the full statement, click here. NEWS--Researchers have reconstructed atmospheric carbon dioxide levels over the past 2.1 million years in the sharpest detail yet, shedding new light on its role in the earth's cycles of cooling and warming. A first-ever analysis and comparison of the carbon footprints of different countries using a single, trade-linked model has been created by researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and the Centre of International Climate and Environment Research - Oslo (CICERO). ScienceDaily (June 22, 2009) — Some of the substances that are helping to avert the destruction of the ozone layer could increasingly contribute to climate warming, according to scientists from NOAA's Earth System Research Laboratory and their colleagues in a new study in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
